How Is Gratitude Related To Charity?

5th September is known throughout the world as the International Day of Charity while 21st September is known as World Gratitude Day.

What’s the link between the two?

For starters…. in recognition of the role of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering within and among nations, as well as of the efforts of charitable organisations and individuals, including the work of Mother Teresa, the General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution A/RES/67/105 designated the 5th of September (the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa) as the International Day of Charity.

Here’s the link:

The starting (and long-lasting) way of being charitable stems from a grateful heart. After all, we can’t give what we don’t have. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can bring positivity and happiness into our lives.

It’s more than just saying “thank you”; it’s about acknowledging the kindness and support of others. In this fast-paced world, taking the time to express gratitude can make a significant difference in our relationships and overall well-being. Here are 10 simple ways to show gratitude:

1) Say Thank You
Start with the basics. Whenever someone does something kind for you, whether it’s holding the door, helping with a task, or offering a kind word, say thank you sincerely. This simple phrase can go a long way in making others feel appreciated.

2) Handwritten Notes
In our digital age, a handwritten thank-you note stands out. Take a moment to write a heartfelt note or letter expressing your gratitude to someone. It shows that you’ve taken the time and effort to convey your appreciation.

3) Acts of Kindness
Pay it forward. When someone does something nice for you, consider doing a kind deed for someone else. This chain of kindness can create a ripple effect of gratitude in your community.

4) Listen Actively
Sometimes, showing gratitude involves being a good listener. When someone shares their thoughts or concerns, be present and attentive. It lets them know you value their feelings.

5) Small Gestures
Small acts of kindness can have a big impact. Surprise someone with their favourite treat, offer a sincere compliment, or lend a helping hand when needed. These gestures show that you care.

6) Celebrate Milestones
Recognise and celebrate achievements, both big and small, in the lives of your loved ones. Acknowledging their success demonstrates your support and appreciation for their efforts.

7) Quality Time
Spend quality time with friends and family. Put away distractions, be fully present, and engage in meaningful conversations. Your time and attention are precious gifts.

8) Express Appreciation at Work
In a professional setting, express gratitude to colleagues, employees, or superiors for their hard work and contributions. A simple “thank you for your efforts” can boost morale and teamwork.

9) Volunteer
Give back to your community. Volunteering your time or resources is a powerful way to show gratitude for the blessings in your life and make a positive impact on others.

10) Self-Reflection
Lastly, don’t forget to be grateful for yourself. Reflect on your own accomplishments, growth, and resilience. Self-appreciation is just as important as appreciating others.

Incorporating these practices into your daily life can lead to a more grateful and fulfilling experience. Remember, gratitude is not only about making others feel valued but also about recognising the richness of your own life.

By making gratitude a way of life, you can cultivate stronger relationships and a deeper sense of contentment…… and that automatically leads to a charitable spirit.
